Sleep Disorder Statistics:

 50-70 million US adults have a sleep disorder.
48.0% report snoring.
37.9% reported unintentionally falling asleep during the day at least once in the preceding month.
4.7% reported nodding off or falling asleep while driving at least once in the preceding month.
Drowsy driving is responsible for 1,550 fatalities and 40,000 nonfatal injuries annually in the United States.

Sleep Needs by Age Group:

Adult: 7 – 9 hours
Teenager: 8 – 10 hours
Child 6 – 12 years: 9- 12 hours
Child 3 – 5 years:  10 – 13 hours (including naps)
Child 1 – 2 years: 11 – 14 hours (including naps)
Infants 4 -12 months: 12 – 16 hours (including naps)


Sufficient and consistent sleep is an essential part of staying healthy and poor sleep can negatively affect a person's life in many ways. For Americans, getting enough sleep is one of the most important wellbeing activities for their personal lives. However, according to a Statista survey from 2017, approximately 35 percent of males and 39 percent of females reported getting far too little or rather too little sleep. A shortage of sleep is defined when sleep duration is shorter than 7 hours per workday. Short sleep duration is common among young people, despite the negative consequences with up to 73 percent of high school students sleeping less than 8 hours on an average school night. A recent survey from Statista also found that while 40 percent of males stated they do not have sleeping problems, such as trouble sleeping through the night or trouble falling asleep, only 27 percent of females stated they do not have such problems. The most commonly reported negative impacts of missing sleep included looking tired, being less productive, and feeling moody or irritable.
